The prophet Isaiah spoke on behalf of God, “Behold I do a new thing!”  I find great joy in watching the Spirit of God move in the lives of a new generation of Christian leaders.  Watching Phil Baker grow as a young man of God and vibrant leader has given me particular delight. I first met Phil as I taught him in a homiletics class at Houston Baptist University.  Later I saw how God used him as a gifted pastor.  Through his writing in this book I have come to know yet another dimension of his multi-faceted ministry. I commend this book to you wholeheartedly.  You will profit greatly by reading it and taking the truth into your soul.  In this book Phil demonstrates that the Spirit of our God is blowing with a new and fresh wind upon His church.

Jesus delivered revolutionary teaching by asking great questions. In that same spirit, Phil is asking questions that modern Evangelicalism desperately needs to be asking. The beauty of “New” is that it takes us back to ideas that are very old to bring biblical perspective to modern theological debates. It is refreshing to dive into the ancient Hebrew and Bible texts and also the writings of the earliest church fathers. Regardless of where you stand theologically, “New” is a helpful experience to process not only what you believe but why you believe it.  As you dig in, you might find that familiar traditions and beliefs are actually old wineskins in need of bursting. “New” journeys through Phil’s own questions of spirituality and faith, and it is a refreshingly honest narrative of pursuing the fullness of Christ.

When I think of the contribution of Pastor and Author Phil Baker, I think of his focus on “God as the Goal!” His message through his first book and literary contribution to the world is not success which is temporal, money which can distract, or the pursuit of mirages which are counterfeit locals of fulfillment. His message is the mandatory need for GOD and GOD ALONE!! To assure his readers get that truth, a transparent pursuit of God is shared as our utmost necessity in life now & life eternal, illustrated by many destructive personal lifestyles (wineskins) that prevent us from embracing Him as we should. Join Phil Baker on this pilgrimage to live for what matters most. You’ll be glad you did!

There are certain reminders that believers need to hear again and again. One of the most important of these is to continue to check the filters through which we read and interpret Scripture. While this reminder predominates in seminary textbooks, Phil Baker demonstrates to a more popular audience the dangers of reading the Bible through the wrong lenses. The readers will enjoy the captivating topics and passages Baker covers and especially appreciate the pastoral tone in which he does so.”
